Just got my first high refresh rate monitor (1080p@165hZ) and I have to say I see what all of the hype was about. Set up some older online FPSes (Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament ‘99, Unreal Tournament 2004, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2) and I have to say I’m really digging how responsive the controls are with the higher refresh rate and vsync off. Feels even better to have gotten this display for under $150 (refurb + 5% off coupon). The only down side is that I feel like I need a better CPU to keep the framerate over about 120hz consistently. My GPU is sitting at 50%-60% used in newer games (Doom Eternal, etc) and my CPU is taking a beating with the framerate between 100-120 hz in demanding areas.

What has your experience been with high refresh rate gaming? Do you prefer higher resolution or higher refresh rate?

Trying too hard

I knew 240hz was going to be a no go from CPU and game standpoint (lots of the games I play engine cap at 200hz).

Scoping out another 5600x after Best Buy cancelled my order for undisclosed reasons.

How would you say your first experience with 144hz 1080p felt?

i’m afraid of trying monitors above 60khz cuz it’ll “ruin” slower ones for me

It has for me

Trying too hard

5600x has been in place for several months now. The biggest bottleneck is now my RTX 2060 but I’m a patient cheapskate and I’m not paying scalper prices to play at high frame rates.

144 Hz and 165 Hz gaming still owns
