Just got my first high refresh rate monitor (1080p@165hZ) and I have to say I see what all of the hype was about. Set up some older online FPSes (Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament ‘99, Unreal Tournament 2004, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2) and I have to say I’m really digging how responsive the controls are with the higher refresh rate and vsync off. Feels even better to have gotten this display for under $150 (refurb + 5% off coupon). The only down side is that I feel like I need a better CPU to keep the framerate over about 120hz consistently. My GPU is sitting at 50%-60% used in newer games (Doom Eternal, etc) and my CPU is taking a beating with the framerate between 100-120 hz in demanding areas. What has your experience been with high refresh rate gaming? Do you prefer higher resolution or higher refresh rate? |

i got a 144hz monitor first. loved it tried a 240hz monitor. ran into the same problem as you (cpu couldn’t keep up) built a new computer with a faster cpu 240hz gaming owns |
I knew 240hz was going to be a no go from CPU and game standpoint (lots of the games I play engine cap at 200hz). Scoping out another 5600x after Best Buy cancelled my order for undisclosed reasons. |

i game at 1080p/144Hz and I have a 2nd monitor @1440p |
How would you say your first experience with 144hz 1080p felt? |
I basically went from not having a gaming pc for several years to buying the 144hz monitor so I can’t really give a “wow” moment or anything but definitely can feel the difference when I’m messing around on a 60hz panel doing testing or benchmarking |
60hz feels really bad to me for daily computer use these days, even browsing is nicer with high refresh |
I’m under the impression 144Hz/1440p is a real sweet spot (that i am in) |
i’m afraid of trying monitors above 60khz cuz it’ll “ruin” slower ones for me |
it will |
Eventually I’ll upgrade my entire setup and i’ll have 4k/144Hz monitor for main and 4k/60 on my 2nd mon |
It has for me |

5600x has been in place for several months now. The biggest bottleneck is now my RTX 2060 but I’m a patient cheapskate and I’m not paying scalper prices to play at high frame rates. 144 Hz and 165 Hz gaming still owns |

It’s gonna get hotter soon |
